Request for Information: Registration on the Arts, Culture and Heritage Professional Database

The department of Arts and Culture hereby calls upon all interested parties within the sector to register their individual, group or organisation's profile on the Arts, Culture and Heritage Database.

The database will be used by the Department for the following: Puplic participation in the development, implementation and monitoring of national legislation and international treaties and conventions within the arts, culture and heritage fraternity, consultation with experts for the development of position/policy papers, promotion of the sector nationally and internationally.

The database will cover the following areas: individuals and groups (NGOs, Poets (imbongi), Musicians, Performers, Writers, Designers etc.); Cultural practitioners (Directors, Producers, Choreographer, etc.). Professionals from universities, Cultural Institutions, Associations, etc; other professions in the arts, culture and heritage sector not listed above.

Calling the attention of Paper Restoration Experts

If you have the knowledge and expertise to restore historical maps both framed and unframed please contact Nellie Somers at somers@ukzn.ac.za.

One of our academic lecturers at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pmb branch has a collections of historical maps that he would like restored.



National Library of South Africa: Public Libraries Training Programme

The Department of Arts and Culture over the past years invested major funding for the development of public libraries in South Africa.

The NLSA was invited to take part by way of contributing in specialist areas.

Among others the NLSA will contribute this year in the form of a preservation programme. Training will be offered to approx 200 public libraries in all provinces. Training will cover aspects of disaster planning, recovery operations and book repairs. Each public library will also receive a toolkit with book repair tools and materials.

Twenty public libraries will be participating. Over the next months regular workshops will be held country-wide (till November 2009).
